Imo embarks on reconstruction of Mbakwe’s country home

A few days after President Muhammadu Buhari successfully commissioned the rebuilt Imo State House of Assembly, the Imo state government is set to hand over a rebuilt country home of the first civilian governor of the state, Chief Sam Mbakwe in Avutu, Obowo local government area.

In a chat with our correspondent, the state Commissioner for Housing and  Urban Development, Lady Dr Love Ineh, whose responsibility it is to oversee the reconstruction, said the government was poised to hand over a modern place of living to the family left behind by the late elder statesman who governed the state selflessly during the Second Republic.

According to her, the project is already 90-95% completed, with modern fencing, modern obi (resting place), modern security gate, modern doors and windows, with the building reroofed and Mbakwe’s tomb retouched.

“Also, the tennis court and swimming pool have been fixed, the generator house rebuilt and a good generator installed. The children’s apartment and boys’ quarters rebuilt, airconditioners and borehole installed, with the old iron tank removed for new GP tanks; and lightning of the compound improved with the parking lot upgraded.”

The commissioner said the government decided to embark on this project because Governor Hope Uzodimma “is somebody who respects constituted authorities. He believes that one day he will cease to be the governor and would need to be remembered like this.”
