Imo unrest: Collation of names of unjustly arrested, detained begins

Following a meeting with the Commissioner of Police and the security adviser to the governor of Imo state, a help desk will open Saturday at the Bar Centre to collate the names of innocent Imolites arrested and detained by the Nigeria Police for the purpose of securing their release.

Our correspondent gathered that the Bar, through its committee on human rights, would anchor and coordinate the help desk at the Bar Centre to entertain complaints on unlawful arrests and detention of Imolites by security forces.

It was further gathered that complaints received would be taken up with the appropriate quarters in order to secure the release of the detainees, considering the fact that courts were not sitting owing to the judiciary workers’ strike.

The state’s publicity secretary of the Nigeria Bar Association(NBA), Owerri,Uzor Enwere, said, “This approach is dictated by the precarious security situation in Imo State at the moment which has the semblance of war situation.

“The outcome of our interactions revealed that there is more to the situation than meets the eye. The Human Rights help desk of the Bar will open from tomorrow, June 4, 2021, at the Bar Centre from 10am,” he said.
