Impeachment: Ekiti lawmakers acted illegally – NBA

The Nigerian Bar Association has described as illegal the removal of the Speaker of the Ekiti state House of Assembly and his replacement with a new one by seven members of the assembly.

President of the association, Mr Augustine O. Alegeh, also said in a press release at the weekend that the said seven members of the assembly had acted in breach of the constitution when they confirmed the nomination of interim chairmen of local government councils, special advisers to the state governor and commissioners.
These acts, the NBA said, were “utterly in breach of the constitution and are illegal and unlawful.”

It said: “The Nigeria Bar Association strongly condemns the aforesaid unconstitutional and unlawful acts and calls on the members of the Ekiti state House of Assembly involved in these unconstitutional acts to have due respect and regard to the clear provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and to conduct themselves in a more responsible manner as elected representatives of the people.”

The NBA urged the security agencies in Ekiti state to ensure that law and order prevail at all times in the state.
“The acts of these seven (7) members of Ekiti state House of Assembly constitute a potent threat to our developing democracy and must be checked immediately,” it added.
