In Delta, gas explosion burns many to death, others injured, houses razed

Tragedy struck in Agbor in Ika South local government area of Delta state on Friday as several persons were killed following explosion that rocked gas plant.

Thick inferno from the incident razed several houses while several people were burnt behond recognition, Blueprint reports.

It was gathered that many vehicles plying the Benin-Agbor-Asaba expressway were also engulfed in the fire which started around 7pm. 

The gas plant was said to have been built within residential area resulting to the tragedy.

Eyewitness said many persons who sustained different degrees of burnt were rushed to different hospitals in the area. Some of them reportedly died later.

The cause of the fire was not ascertain but a source alleged that a customer was refilling an empty gas cylinder when the sudden fire occured.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya who confirmed the incident however said it would be hasty to ascertain the number of casualties.

“One person was burnt alive from the report available. Many were injured, it was a massive incident. Our men were going round the hospitals to know how many persons were injured. The gas plant was built around residential area and many houses around were affected,” he said.
