In support of tenure elongation for Gana

Permit me a space in your widely read newspaper to lend my support for tenure extension for Alh. Abdullahi Mohammed Gana as Commandant-General Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, as one of the options canvassed in page 7 of the Nigerian Vanguard of January 30, 2021, where it was suggested that Gana has two more years to reach retirement age of 60 years and the statutory 35 years in service as provided in the extant laws of Nigeria. It was adduced in the publication that records show Abdullahi Mohammed Gana is just 58 years of age and is less than the mandatory 35 years in service.

As a patriot and concerned citizen who has been following trending issues and events in the Nigeria project, I feel obliged to say these two issues adduced by the newspaper that Gana is not up to 35 years in service as well as not up to the statutory 60 years age of retirement, in this regard, that should be the basis for allowing him to reach the required age of service which is 60 and 35 years, respectively.  With all intent and purpose, the Learned Attorney General of the federation by virtue of being the chief law officer of the federation as provided in section 150 of the Nigerian constitution 1999 (as amended) should draw the attention of our amiable president to these two fundamental and germane issues: Abdullahi Mohammed Gana hasn’t reached the statutory age of ‘60 years and has two more years to go in service’.

Interestingly, I believe Mr. President who is an harbinger of rule of law and has severally promised to defend the spirit and letters of the constitution, will have no option than to allow Abdullahi Mohammed Gana to complete is statutory 35 years in service. Finally, I hope the attorney-general of the federation will rise to the occasion by taking the bull by the horns, by giving necessary legal opinion and true interpretation of the extant laws on Abdullahi Mohammed Gana’s issue, as rule of law is the corner stone of any civilized society, which could be the basis for our assessment by the comity of nations.
