In Yobe, NHRC trains military on civilian protection

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has engaged key officers and soldiers of Sector 2, Operation Lafiya Dole in Yobe state in a training to reduce the high rate of infringement and violation against civilians.

The training which was declared open at Summit Hotel in Damaturu, Yobe state capital by the Executive Secretary of the Commission represented by deputy director Investigations, Richmond Ehemeh, was aimed at reminding the security forces on the importance of considering the civilian rights during counter insurgency.

“To further sustain the gains made so far, the commission in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is here to training, key military officers who are directly involved in the counter-insurgency operations in the northeast. 

“This training is on civilian protection and mainstreaming human rights principles into counter insurgency operations,” he said.

Ehemeh said it was expected at the training that there would be significant reduction in the casualty level and also reduce the humanitarian consequences of internal displacement and the protection challenges arising thereafter.

In his response, the commander provost group of the Sector 2 Operation Lafiya Dole in the state, Colonel Musa Hussaini, said the training would be a catalyst of improving their relationship with civilians.

“It is going to be of importance, although we already have this desk, the human rights and the humanitarian principles we have here are going to do a lot for our soldiers in terms of enhancing skills by impacting positively in addressing the security concern of civilians,” he said.

Six key officers and 30 soldiers of sector two benefitted from the training which lasted for two days.
