Independence anniversary: NIPS alumni beckons Nigerians on national service

The Alumni association of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies has advised Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the service of a better Nigeria.
In a press statement issued by the alumni association’s President, MD Abubakar, former Inspector-General of Police, to mark Nigeria’s 59th independence anniversary, on Tuesday, it noted that Nigeria’s diversity  should be explored positively for national unity and economic prosperity.
“We, as citizens, must have a constructive engagement with the Government to further consolidate the development that has been achieved.”

Commenting on national security, the association said there had been significant improvement in combating criminality across the county, while commending President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing one of their own, Major General Bashir Salihi Magashi (rtd) as Defence Minister.
“It (Magashi’s appointment) is a right step in the right direction. We are convinced he will bring his expertise and experience to bear in crafting proactive defence policies and strategies for the nation.
“We have noticed a remarkable improvement in the area of security, and we commend the Government for its efforts in tackling our security challenges. The loss of lives and property as a result of insurgency, militancy, kidnapping, conflicts between herdsmen and farmers and avoidable inter-ethnic clashes are unprecedented.

“To further complement the Federal Government’s efforts on National security, AANI recently set up a committee comprising security policy specialists and highly experienced members who brainstormed and produced a report on how to tackle the nation’s security challenges,” the statement read.
It further advised the federal government to explore opportunities in the small and medium scale enterprises sector as a way of “engaging our youth to reduce the unemployment rate.
