Independence: Lalong sues for peace, better society

As Nigeria marks its 60th anniversary the Plateau state Governor, Simon Lalong, has urged the people of the state to general to be law abiding and promote peace.

Speaking during a special prayer to mark the anniversary, Friday at the Jos Central Mosque, Lalong said the country has greatly grown in its 60th years of nationhood.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Saadu Bello, said it was only in an atmosphere of peace that meaningful development would thrive.

“We have prayed for the development of our country as we get set to mark its 60th independence. That the country has waxed and is waxing stronger despite our diversity is enough reason to celebrate.

“We are the biggest economy and giant of Africa. Our economy has grown and if not for this Covid-19, we will have seen lots of development,” he said.

According to him, the people of Plateau state should continue to promote the course of peace and peaceful coexistence.

Also speaking, the Chief Imam of Jos, Sheikh Lawal Adam Abubakr, said the county has within 60 years gained tremendous progress.

“May Allah, see to the peace of the country.  May he guide our leaders to lead us, with justice and fairness. May Allah protect Nigeria and Nigerians from the reoccurrence of those bad things that had happened in the last 60 years,” he prayed.  

Reps adopt E-sittings, voting

In fulfilment of its Legislative Agenda the 9th House of Representatives has installed an electronic system for all of its proceedings.

The House would, on resumption next week, discard voice voting and drop its reference to hard copies of instruments of legislation.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, inspected the installation of the system in the Green Chamber.

He said the House has, by the installation of the equipment, fulfilled a major promise to the Nigerian public.

The spokesman said the device would drastically cut the cost of legislation in the House, noting that: “A lot of money will be reduced from the non-usage of paper.”

While disclosing that the e-parliament was installed cost-free, he assured that it would also be maintained without cost to the public treasury.

Kalu also told journalists that members of the House would soon undergo training on the proper use and adaptation to the system.
