INEC: CTA lauds Prof. Mahmood for stepping down despite re-appointment


The Center for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) has commended the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu, for following due process by handed over and step aside despite his re-appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The INEC boss, whose tenured ended on Monday is awaiting his confirmation for another tenure by the Senate.

President Mohammadu Buhari on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, had renominated Prof. Yakubu for another term in office.

But responding to the handing over gesture through a statement signed by its executive director Faith Nwadishi, Monday in Abuja, CTA, a consortium of several Civil Society Organizations with a large repertoire of media partners, said “Due process has been his hallmark hence the tremendous achievements and progress made in INEC in the last five years.

“The Centre for Transparency Advocacy notes with delight that Professor Yakubu even though re-appointed has followed due process by handing over and stepping down albeit temporarily before his confirmation.

“CTA commends this gesture and hopes that this sets an example for other public office holders to emulate and uphold the tenets of democracy in Nigeria.

“We wish him well and further call on the Senate to expedite the process of confirming Professor Mahmood Yakubu so as to start early in the works ahead especially the commencement of the Continuous Voter Registration across the country and preparations towards all outstanding off-seasons elections and the 2023 General Elections.”
