INEC national commissioner, 3 RECs for Benue rerun

One national commissioner and three Resident Electoral Commissioners have been deployed to Benue for  Saturday() Governorship and State Assembly rerun elections.

National Commissioner in charge of Anambra, Benue and Enugu who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday in Makurdi, assured that the Commission will be neutral in the supplementary election.

He said INEC is determine to conduct a transparent, credible, free and fair rerun election in the state.

The National Commissioner also said all the sensitive and none sensitive materials meant for the rerun elections in the state have been dispatched adding that the only challenge the Commission is facing is that of security.

“We have dispatched all sensitive and none sensitive materials to the various local government Collation centres, but our major challenge is adequate security to maintain peace in the affected areas. We have held series of meetings with security and they have assured us of adequate security.

“Benue voters are entitled to peaceful election and INEC is determined to conduct a peaceful supplementary election in the state.

“INEC knows that the whole world is watching, European, American and other international observers are already here and we cannot afford to fail or disappoint the people,” he said.

He disclosed that the Oju/Obi federal constituency was experiencing some problems because only one local government out of the two in the federal constituency, had turned in result during the election. He said the returning officer of the election had in his report also alleged that the declaration was made under duress.

“The returning officer for Oju/Obi federal House of Representatives reported that only result of Oju was collated when he was made under duress to declare the result. For that reason we have not issued certificate of return to the affected candidate who allegedly won the election,” he added.
