Infant mortality rate: Nigeria ranks highest in Africa – Expert

A medical practitioner with the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Dr. Zubaida Faruk, has confirmed that Nigeria ranks highest in Africa in terms of child mortality rate.

Speaking at a five-day workshop organised by the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in conjunction with Society of Critical Care Medicine, a non-governmental organisation based in the United States, Faruk said no country could ever develop without lending credence to the issue of curtailing the alarming rate with which children under the age of five were dying.

It said Nigeria also ranks as the worst in Africa in terms of neonatal mortality rate.

She said: “It is most expedient to train Nurses and Doctors in pediatric to acquire the basic skills of tackling the menace expressing optimism that, with the US based NGO’s intervention the feat is achievable.”
