Insecurity: Igbo body advocates community policing

The Ezumezu Isinweke, a worldwide apex socio-cultural body of Ihitte-Uboma people in Imo state has advocated for the formation of local security outfits, but must be in accordance with the stipulated laws of the country.

This assertion was made by retired Superintendent of Police Geoffrey Iwuagwu, a guest speaker at the virtual summit of Ezumezu Isinweke monthly program with the topic “Security and Local Policing”.

The retired police officers advised local communities to develop a legitimate ways of securing the lives and property of the people in their respective communities.

He said, “these outfits should be registered with the approval of the state Commissioners of Police and in accordance with the laws of the country.”

He said the rise of in insecurity could be traced to the consumption of hard drugs by the youths, frustration and dispair caused by poverty and breakdown in social institutions, attitudinal disorder among government employees and politicians which breeds frustration, disappointment and aggression among the youths.

According to him, “There is also the issue of prolification of arms and ammunitions into the wrong hands. This led to the Inspector General of Police revocating all licenses issued in 2019. Anybody bearing arms no matter the type, is seen to be committing an offense called the unlawful possession of fire arms.”

He also advocated for the implementation of the government industrial policies that encourage industries to start employing the country’s growing population, full implementation of prohibition of fire arms laws.

The security expert advised communities to organise awareness programmes with relevant government and non-governmental organisations on the dangers of illegal usage of hard drugs.
