Insecurity in Zamfara: Matawalle goes tough, fires warning shot at ex-governor Yari

The Zamfara state governor Hon. Bello Mohammed Matawalle has strongly cautioned his predecessor, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, to stop politicising security issues capable of disrupting his administration’s effort in curbing insecurity in the state or be arrested.
Governor Matawalle gave the warning through his Director General, Press Affairs, Yusuf Idris, at a press conference Sunday in Gusau while reacting to recent attack on Gummi community which led to the killing of 14 innocent people by the suspected group of armed bandits.
“We recognise the fact that Yari has freedom of movement especially in Zamfara state and I never said he should not come to Zamfara, but one thing for sure is, he has to respect the law of the land as it relates to political gathering which has been banned now, if he tries that again, he will face the consequences,” Matawalle said.

Matawalle further accused the former governor for masterminding the increase of insecurity carnage particularly by organising a prohibited political gathering and recruitment of over 8000 outlawed vigilante group (Yansakai) specifically to launch attacks on Fulani people, a situation which he said led to increase of banditry and other forms of criminality in the state.
“We should note that these recent attacks in Gummi like in the past are being caused by members of the outlawed Yansakai group recruited by the former governor and don’t forget the crisis that was generated throughout the country in 2013 when former governor Abdulaziz Yari as governor purchased firearms for distribution to outlawed Yansakai group, one will wonder where these weapons are now,” Gov Matawalle said.

The governor also challenged recent statement made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) publicity secretary in the state, Hon. Ibrahim Danmaliki, that there are three million guns circulating in the bushes across Zamfara state.

Reacting, the APC publicity secretary while reacting said, no one can stop Abdulaziz Yari from organising a political gathering in the state.
His words, “We are ever ready to be jailed in prison and no one can have the right and privilege to stop us from organising a political gathering in the state.”
