Insecurity: INEC relocates 24 centres in Yobe ahead of Presidential polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe state has
relocated 24 registration centres to alternative places ahead of the February 16, Presidential, National Assembly elections due to inaccessibility.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Ahmad Makama, disclosed this to Blueprint on Thursday on their level of preparedness.

“At our security meeting today (Thursday), we invited the chairmen of the affected local governments to defend the outcome of report submitted by our Electoral Officers in respect to inaccessible centres.”

“After our meeting, we completely removed Gulani local government council in the list, because it’s now safe and is agreeable to the Chairman, the INEC, Security committee and all the stakeholders”.

“So now we have 24 centres that are inaccessible which after we fine-tuned them, preferred or alternatives locations were provided for them and all of us are comfortable with that”, he said.

The REC further told Blueprint that the security agencies have assured INEC of voters’ safety.  Makama, therefore called on the citizens to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the elections.

On the Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), the REC, said it was their wish that all unclaimed PVCs should be collected before the polls, however the Commission  distributed 150,000 PVCs within two months, leaving behind 40,000 PVCs as at February 8, 2019.
