Insecurity: SW govs have duty to protect citizens – AD chieftain

A chieftain of the Alliance for Democracy (AD)  in Oyo state, Engineer Hakeem Alao  Sunday asked Nigerians to embrace the establishment of the South west joint security outfit,Operation Amotekun  by the South west governors.

The AD chieftain who was the party’s governorship candidate in the state during the last year governorship election in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan declared that the establishment of Amotekun should be viewed from the fact that the South west governors have a duty to protect their citizens in case the federal government of Nigeria failed to do so.

Engineer Alao noted that apart from the fact that the issue of security “is exclusively a statutory function of the federal government ” the South west governors too, on their part, have a duty as chief security officers of their states, to protect the lives and property of their people in a situation where the federal government has not performed as expected.

“Although the issue of security is exclusively a statutory function of the federal government considering how our federalism is structured, the south west governors have a duty to protect the lives and property of their people in a situation where the federal government has not performed as expected in a period where everybody becomes victims of insecurity, particularly in the hands of strangers, and the regular police have not been able to adequately secured our people,” he said.

The AD Chieftain added, “considering the security threats and all forms of criminal activities going on across the country, particularly in Yoruba land, alien to us as a race, and have proved difficult to nip in the bud, which is a complete failure on the part of the federal government, no true son of the Yoruba race would go against the formation of the Western Nigerian Security Network (WNSN), Amotekun”.

The AD governorship candidate  tasked the South west governors to also map out short and long term plans to secure the geopolitical zone socio economically.
