Insecurity: We‘re resolute, our commitment unshaken – Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said that the Nigerian Army’s commitment to the collective peace, security and stability of the country remained “resolute and unshaken.”

The Army Chief said this while addressing recuperating soldier during the Eid-el Kabir celebration at the 7 Division Medical Centre and Hospital Services, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

Represented by Chief of Training and Opertaions, Maj. Gen. Enobong Udoh, the Army Chief said the Nigerian Army had lived up to expectations and remained ahead of the threats bedeviling the country despite some daunting challenges.

“I must say that so far, we have performed creditably well and I commend all your efforts, though a lot still needs to be done especially in the face of emerging contemporary security challenges,” Buratai said.

He said the Eid E1 Kabir festival held special place for the army, as it reminded the officers and soldiers of the significance of “loyalty, obedience and sacriflce”, even as it provides a unique opportunity for the personnel to reflect and redouble their efforts towards fulfilling their roles and justifying the confidence reposed in them by Nigerians.

“Let me at this juncture emphasise that loyalty, obedience and sacrifice, which Eid E1 Kabir epitomises, are constantly being observed by the Nigerian Army in the conduct of our operations. As expected, our loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces should be total and unwavering,” Buratai said.

“We must continue to subordinate ourselves and act professionally in support of civil authorities whenever we are called upon to do so. That is a veritable way to justify the confidence which Nigerians repose in the Nigerian Army and ensure continued support for the Service. We must bear in mind that obedience to lawful orders is a hallmark of discipline and discipline remains the bedrock of the military.

“Therefore, discipline and courage must remain our watch words in our personal conduct as well as during operations, as we seek to defeat the remnants of ISWAP threats in the North East and security challenges in other parts of our country.”

He commended the sacrifices of troops in the ongoing operations across the country as they discharge their statutory responsibility satisfactorily, adding that their dedication to duty had ensured  that the army remain the bastion of the country’s unity.

“The doggedness you have brought to bear in the conduct of these operations has continued to ensure improved security and has provided a condusive environment for socio-economic activities to thrive,” he said.

The Army Chief paid tribute to troops that had paid the supreme price in various operations across the country, and assured that the army would continue to meet its obligations to their families “to ensure that the void left by their loved ones is not felt.”
