Insurgency: FAO moves to strengthen collaboration with Yobe govt



United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) said it would continue to collaborate with Yobe state government in providing food assistance to victims of Boko Haram Insurgency.

FAO representative in Nigeria Mr. Sufyan Koroma,  disclosed this while paying a courtesy call on Governor Ibrahim Gaidam on Thursday at government house, Damaturu.

The FAO representative while thanking Yobe government for supporting humanitarian activities, further disclosed that FAO has recorded 3 years of effective presence in the state.

“For the three years of our presence here, we were able to distribute
6000 goats and food items for victims of insurgency for them to regain
their means of livelihood”

In his response, Governor Gaidam represented by his deputy, Abubakar
D. Aliyu said 70 per cent of the state’s population are into agricultural activities that was why the state government cultivated 1,096,554 hectares of land. out of which 366,000 hectares are Fadama land and has 765 km of rivers, tributaries, flood plans and lake in 12 out of the 17 local government areas.

Gaidam further told the visitors that Yobe government sold the cheapest fertilizer of N3,000 to farmers, apart from grains procured under National Programme on Food Security during last farming season.

He then commended the FAO for the numerous assistance rendered as
part of drive for peace building especially the distribution of seeds,
assorted food items, fertilizer among others.
