International Day of Peace: NGO calls for tolerance among citizens

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), International alert in collaboration with Taimako Community Development Initiatives has called on citizens to tolerate each other and to also partner security agencies to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast.

The Executive Director, Taimako CDI, Gambo Garba Muh’d, made the call Monday at a programme commemorating International Day of Peace with a theme “Climate change: Action for peace” in Damaturu, Yobe state capital.

He said, “the day which was first observed in 1981 was an unanimous United Nations resolution, aimed at creating awareness on the
significance of peace to humanity and to also contribute to building a Culture of Peace.”

“It is a way of wiping out crisis and conflicts around the world and establishes peace by embracing and preaching it regardless of religion difference. Some of the activities to mark the day include lectures, visit to orphanage homes, peaceful rallies among others,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the Programme Manager of International Alert, Mr. Williams E, said the celebration was geared towards informing
communities to have peace, that was why people with disabilities were not also left out in the commemoration.

He, further, said without peace no meaningful development could be achieved.

Some participants, Abubakar Gana and Hafsat Modu, disclosed to Blueprint that with the recent happenings of insecurity in the
Northeast, they now know the role peace played in every society.

Papers were presented on “climate change for peace, roles of media in promoting peace and stability, community-based inclusive development”, among others.
