Irate youths kill 2, set 1 suspected criminal ablaze in Akwa Ibom



Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers on Sunday invaded Mbiabong Itam community in Itu Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom state, and killed a youth identified as Ecole.

It was gathered that Ecole who owned a grocery shop in the village was shot on the head and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he later gave up the ghost.

Blueprint reports that in the ensuing confusion that night, youths of the community with the help of the vigilantee team arrested two members of the robbery gang, killed, and later set ablaze a mini bus used by the robbers in the process.

However, one of the gang member identified as Itoowo from Usuk Ediene community in Ikono LGA of Akwa Ibom state was arrested alive that morning and kept in the village town hall, where he was being interogated by the villagers.

However, luck ran out of him when news of Ecole who later died from the armed robbers’ gunshots filtered in that morning as the youths broke into the town and set him ablaze.

A community source who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “The gunmen about seven in number drove into the village in a mini bus and made their way directly to Ecole’s shop at about 12 am on Sunday.

“They started parking things into the waiting van before Ecole rose from sleep and tried to resist them and in the ensuing battle one of them shot him on his forehead. He was rushed to a hospital in Uyo LGA before he died

Blueprint reports that the whole community gathered at the town hall watch the armed robber before he was set ablaze.

The police Public Relations officer, Odiko Macdon, when contacted said he was yet to be briefed on the incident but promised to investigate.

He said, “Such incident has not been brought to my table. But I will make some inquiries about it.”
