Irrigation: Joy overflows as NERI empowers 150 farmers in Yobe

As part of efforts to enhance the agricultural activities, a non-governmental organisation, North-east Regional Initiative (NERI), in collaboration with Yunusari local government council, has distributed 150 units of water pumps to farmers.

Flagging off the distribution in Kanamma, Friday, the chairman, Caretaker Committee, represented by the supervisory councilor on agriculture, Bukar Kolo Kanamma, called on the beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity by cultivating farms to help their families.

He commended the NERI for the numerous renovations and reconstruction of structures in the local government which the insurgents had burnt.

Speaking earlier, the NERI programme coordinator, Abatcha Kachalla, said the water pumps were given freely to the farmers to “help them recover from trauma of the insurgency, get back their means of livelihood and not to be lured into the activities of the insurgents as result of poverty.”

“The distribution of the 150 water pumps was to assist the vulnerable communities here because most of them depend solely on farming as occupation. We are doing this to reduce the vulnerability among the victims of violent extremists for them to have food sufficiency and be self reliant,” he said.

Blueprint reports that the training was earlier carried out for all the beneficiaries on how to use the machines and carry out minor repairs.

Kyari Ali, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked NERI and Yunusari local government for the gesture and promised to make judicious use of the machines.
