Is #RevolutionNow a success or failure?

Monday, August 5, would have revolutionised Nigeria had the organisers of #RevolutionNow led by a defeated presidential candidate, Omoleye Sowere, succeeded in his planned revolution protest in all the states including the nation’s seat of power, Abuja. The intention of Sowore with the protest was much more than a mere civil protest to make things better for Nigeria and Nigerians. The bigger intention is to mobilise Nigerians at home and abroad for a ‘forceful change of government’ under the guise of revolution.

Thanks to the swift efforts of the Department of State Services, DSS, in arresting Sowore in Lagos for allegedly plotting to subvert a democratically elected government. From all indications, this cannot be farther from the truth.

Before then, the Nigeria Police had described the planned #revolution now as ‘treasonable felony’

Already, there are allegations that some Nigerians in Diasapora released $1million to Sowore to support his cause. In its reaction to the #Revolutionnow Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the sponsors who are desperate for a change of government would have used the ballot box offered during the last elections to achieve their goal. According to him, ‘the days of coups and revolutions are over’.

Luckily, for Nigerians and Nigeria the planned revolution was watered down by the arrest and the fact that most Nigerians were convinced beyond reasonable doubt that it was not intended for the good of the country. For the promoters and supporters of RevolutionNow, it was a great disappointment as only few people were on the streets for the action.

It was surprising that notable supporters of the protests like Professor Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana, among others, did not join them to match words with action. This shows how hypocritical these people are.

The common saying in situations like this that ‘no vanquished and no winner’ does not quite come true. The general feeling is that the organisers, promoters, supporters and financiers have failed in their bid to remove the popularly elected government of PMB from power. Simply, #RevolutionNow has woefully failed while Nigerians have won the attempt to rob them of their mandate bestowed on President Buhari.

No matter what, Nigerians’ and Nigeria’s interest will get an upper hand in any sinister attempt to destabilise it by some few disgruntled and unpatriotic Nigerians for a pittance. The promoters should be real democrats by strategising to democratically take over from PMB in 2023 through the ballot and not revolution.
