It’s time for Adamawa people to vote wisely

The almighty God, in His infinite mercy, created this world in such a way that it takes an individual to effect a change in the society.
For instance, General George Washington led the people of USA to gain independence from The Great Britain. Abraham Lincoln also stood firm and fought for the unity of the country. Martin Luther King (Jnr) also used his God-given oratory power and doctrine of non-violence to fight for the emancipation of black Americans. That struggle is believed to have paved the way for President Barack Obama in that part of the world.
In the 2011 general elections, the now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was a credible alternative to the PDP in Adamawa State. Across the country, the party made a remarkable mark in the elections, winning the states in the South-West.

In 2010, during a search for credible candidates, the party discovered Governor Raji Fashola who is widely believed to be doing well in Lagos State. A similar search in Adamawa State also led to the discovery of Engineer Markus Gundiri who was believed to have been rigged out of the election in 2012. He was believed to be the people’s choice. Presently, as a result of maladministration, there seems to be no hope for the common man in Adamawa. The Nyako-led government had subjected its citizens to suffer untold hardship, neglect and impoverishment.
At a recent function to receive members of the defunct ACN to his new party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yola, Engr. Gundiri observed that, “The Nyako governance was characterised by nepotism, ethno-religious sentiments, corruption, arbitrariness and incompetence. This portends great danger for the unity, peace, progress, good governance and democracy in our society.”

The water and dam engineer regretted that urban and rural infrastructural development was not given proper attention in the state. He said that infrastructure remained the cornerstone of any development.
He wondered why urban and rural roads remained in bad shape despite the billions of naira said to have been expended on them by the last administration. He said that any serious and people-oriented governor must take matters of infrastructural development seriously.

One issue that has continued to attract the attention of the youth on Gundiri’s ‘facebook’ is job creation. His response to such questions is that, in order to create job opportunities for the youth, a governor must establish small scale agro-allied industries to boost agriculture and other aspects of the economy. He said that women and the youth must be gainfully employed to boost the economy of the state and make their lives better.

The rot in education and health sectors also needs to be addressed and the burden of school fees lifted off the shoulders of parents. This way, he argued, more people will be encouraged to enroll in schools across the state.

There is also the need to reform and transform the Adamawa State civil service and local government system. Even the social justice system should not be left out.
Now that Murtala Nyako has been removed from office to pave the way for the right governor that would truly touch the lives of the people, the people of Adamawa must be wise in casting their votes. They must not let what happened to them in the last political dispensation to repeat itself.
