IYD: Peace Corps tasks youths on peace-building

Peace Corp of Nigeria (PCN) has emphasised the role of youths in ensuring a peaceful society, just as it called on youths in the country and the world over to enlist in building lasting peace.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the PCN Public Relations Officer (PRO), Patriot Millicent Umoru, the theme of this year’s celebration, “Youth Building Peace” reaffirmed the crucial role youth has to play in resolving conflict.

According to the statement, “youths are the best constituent in ensuring the success of both peacekeeping and peace building efforts in any society.”

The statement noted that the recent passing into law of a Bill for an act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps by the 8th National Assembly, behooves on the corps the responsibility of mobilising more youth for the promotion of sustainable peace in the country.

This year’s celebration is coated and branded in multiple wave of celebration as the task of building lasting peace within the Nigerian territory is sealed by the passing into law, a Bill for an act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps by the National Assembly.

This move gives statutory recognition to the already existing Peace Corps of Nigeria, in other to continue in its task of mobilising the vast majority of Nigerian Youth to promote sustainable peace,” the statement read in part.

The statement noted further that the potential for a generational hope to experience a happy, healthy and prosperous future for all could be dashed by lack of political would to provide basic infrastructure and social welfare to aid in sustainable development of the youth.

It, however, assured that the Nigerian youths were set to reverse the unfortunate statistics, “and as agents of change, they must desire the entire rudiment that guarantees lasting peace in the society.”

As we join other peace-loving people the world over to mark this historic day, we pray for greater commitment to programs and projects of youth emancipation for national development: Youths alive; Youths for Change and Youths for Nation building.”
