JAMB: No extension for DE application after June 4

The Joint Admissions and matriculation board (JAMB) has said that its Direct Entry (DE) application will end June 4 after which there will be no extension.
The spokesperson for the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin said that the closure of application for DE became necessary in order to avail the board time to plan ahead for the 2018 admission process into various institutions.
“With the policy meeting coming up on June 26, which involves the minister of education and all stakeholders in the sector, the 2018 admission guidelines would be discussed and approved for the board.
“This includes both for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and DE.
“Therefore, candidates who are still interested and want to apply for the DE should use the window period of seven days to apply, as no extension of date will be granted,” he said.
The DE application started in December 2017.
Turkish varsity gives scholarship to Nigerian students
The vice rector of Uludag University in Turkey, Prof. Eray Alper said that the institution needed more international students to increase the ratio of foreign students to its national students and therefore, was ready to offer scholarships to Nigerian students to further their studies in Turkey.
Representatives from the institution reportedly conducted a scholarship examination in Lagos in May.
The vice rector of the university, Prof. Eray Alper, while speaking during the examination, said the move was as an opportunity for Nigerian students who desire to study in a reputable foreign university to do so in Turkey.
Alper said more scholarship examinations would be held in 21 centres across 14 countries.
“This is a yearly examination and it is the second time we are holding it in Lagos. Our university is government-owned and one of the most reputable universities in Turkey. Another benefit of our institution is the tuition fee, which is 90 per cent off tuition and that is very low compared to those in the UK, US, Canada and Australia,” Alper said
However, Alper made it clear that only candidates with high scores would be accepted for the scholarship programme.
“Last year, about 75 students sat for the exam and 40 were accepted and most of them are now schooling in Uludag University. They also learn Turkish and any Nigerian student who is able to learn Turkish to an extent would be able to go ahead with the bachelor’s degree programme in eight months.”
In April, the government of the United Kingdom announced a new scholarship scheme for students in Nigeria and students from the Commonwealth countries.
Also in February, 16 universities in the United Kingdom reportedly visited Abuja to express their willingness to continue facilitating Nigerian students’ quest for quality education in the UK.
