The Jigawa State House of Assembly has demanded explanation from the state government over alleged illegal procurement of the school furniture, which the members said contravened the 2017 budget.
The House also demanded to know the source of funding and the reasons for expending millions of naira without resorting to the House for approval.
The House particularly frowned at the some local government council chairmen who allegedly executed some projects not captured in budgetary allocation at the directive of the Governor.
A member representing Dutse constituency, Alhaji Musa Sule Dutse, and chairman House Committee on Appropriation, in a motion urged the House to investigate the allegation with a view to uncover the claimed irregularities.
Describing the act as a flagrant abuse of the law, he said it must be thoroughly investigated and that those found culpable be penalized to serve as a deterrent to others.
The motion was seconded by member representing Kiyawa constituency, Alhaji Ado Idris Andaza, who said local government councils have no constitutional backing to embark on any capital projects within primary schools aside payments of salaries.
Meanwhile, the Speaker has directed the House Committee on Local Government to investigate the matter and turn in report within two weeks.
It could be recalled that some local government councils recently awarded contracts worth several millions for the construction of chairs and desks and other necessities in some primary schools.
