Jigawa assembly makes U-turn on Lamido varsity funding

Jigawa state House of Assembly has made a U-turn on its bill to restructure the funding source of Sule Lamido University Kafinhausa.

This was made known Monday  in Dutse by the secretary of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Sule Lamido University Kafinhausa branch, Dr. Mistapha Hassan in a chat with reporters.

He said if the state government stops the 27 local government areas’ 2% contribution to the institution, it will amount to crippling the educational activities of the university.

He said the institution was established to cater for the indigenous students who pay only 25% out 100%. He stated further that all the female indigenes and the physically challenged students are from the state.

Also, another ASUU member of the in the university, Dr. Muhammad Jamilu Ibrahim, said it will be unfortunate if the state Assembly stops the 2% contribution to the institution.

“We were given the tape recorded House of Assembly bill presented and deliberated upon on the floor of the House saying that the university is old enough to stand on its own.

“Now, we want the real engines of Jigawa whose money is being used to run the university to know so that they would not be taken unawares by the time the university crashes,” he said.

Also, chairman House Committee on Education, Surajo Muhammed Kantoga said the bill read on the floor was meant to restructure it and not to stop the 2% contributed to the institution.

A week ago, a member presented a bill that sought to restructure the source of funding of the institution because the LGAs lack funds to run their administration.
