Jigawa launches food and nutrition programme for women

Jigawa state government has launched food and nutrition as well as social protection polices to tackle the high rate of maternal/child mortality, poverty  among women in the state.

Addressing participants Tuesday at the official launching of the two policies document in Dutse, the state Deputy Governor Barrister Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia explained that the state government is all out to ensure full implementation of the programme.

He said the government is irked with the available statistics regarding the child malnutrition/stunting rate of 63 percent and the abject poverty among its citizens at 74 percent respectively.

He also commended donor partners, including UNICEF, Safe Children and Action Against Hunger Child Development Grant Program funded by DFID and all other partners that have been assisting the state to tackle the menace of child malnutrition and poverty.

Also the Chief Field Officer, UNICEF Bauchi Mr Bhanu Pathak said  about half of the child mortality in Nigeria is attributed to malnutrition, and  that is why UNICEF identified nutrition as one of the priority interventions in Nigeria and thus the support for developing an institutional framework to address the menace.

The Field Officer, represented by the Nutrition Specialist, Philomena Irene stated that the commitment of UNICEF to continue partnering with the Jigawa state government is to improve the lives of children and women in the state.

Assuring that the collaborative effort is to improve the accountability for nutrition, financing and development of the capacity of the workforce among others.

While the country Director Action Against Hunger Mr Shashwat Sarafat promised to continue supporting Jigawa state on social security protection and Nutrition policies respectively.
