Jigawa releases N18m for refuse evacuation

The Jigawa state Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) has embarked N18 million for clearing of drainage, siltation and evacuation of refuse. The managing director of the Agency, Alhaji Umar Ahmadu, disclosed this to newsmen in his office over the weekend, saying the decision followed indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the streets and water ways in major cities with fears of common diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and gastro enteritis. He said as the raining season draws near, there was need to commence the clearing of drainage and siltation in order to avoid flooding across the 27 local government areas of the state, explaining that they have mobilised traditional leaders, youth groups and collaborate with self help groups for the success of the exercise. He pointed out that they had already cleared four kilometers in Birnin Kudu local government area and evacuated all refuse dumped at Sara international market of Gwaram local council area. According to the managing director, the state government has released the sum of N18milion for the project, adding that the sum of N68 million has been set aside for the Agency in the 2018 budget for its capital expenditure. He further explained that, in spite of the current economic realities, the state government was very prompt in releasing monthly over- head cost for the Agency
