Journalists, crucial in national development – Wamakko

Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, representing Sokoto North Senatorial District says Journalists are playing crucial roles in national development. Senator Aliyu Wamakko spoke on Sunday in Sokoto on the sidelines of the handing over ceremony of the renovated Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), and the public presentation of a Magazine, Th e Newsmaker.

Th is is contaned in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Bashir Rabe Mani and issuued to newsmen in Sokoto. Senator Wamakko, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education described Journalists as indispensable part of the society. Represented by Bashir Rabe Mani, Senator Wamakko therefore urged Journalists to continue to operate in line with the ethics of their profession. He said,’’ Journalists have tremendous powers to make or mar the society, and such powers should be deployed positively and objectively. ‘’ Journalists should always consider patriotism, fear of God and respect for ethics in all they do.’’ Th e lawmaker further vowed to continue to be open and fatherly to working Journalists across the country. ‘’ My doors will continue to be open for them, anytime, while the National Assembly attaches greater prioruty to the freedom of the press. ‘’ Th at was why i commenced the renovation of the press centre which was completed by my successor. ‘’It will go a long way in providing a conducive atmosphere for Journalists in the state to operate,’’ Senator Wamakko, averred, further. Senator Wamakko donated a total of N 500,000, with N250,000, given to the NUJ, while N 250,000, given for the Publisher of the Magazine, Dahiru Kwanberu of Rima Television, Sokoto.
