Journalists urged to update skills, tackle fake practitioners

The Chairman of Osun Local Government Service Commission, Elder Tunde Adedeji, has expressed displeasure over harassment and danger being faced by Journalists in Nigeria, and the world in general.

He thereby advised reporters to strive and acquire modern skills of covering hazardous events and international best practice of reporting.
Speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, Osun state, weekend, Adedeji stated that Journalists should be engaged in training and retraining as being done at the local government service commission.

“Journalism is a very dangerous profession. A criminal does not want to be exposed and journalist want to expose crime. That is why journalists must be vigilant and update their skills regularly.

He condemned public harassment of Journalists by political office holders, urging Journalists to also acquire international best practice of journalism.
Commencing newsmen for the role they played in sustaining democracy in Nigeria, Adedeji warned that some people who apparently are unprofessional have seen journalism as means of survival and thereby causing more harms to the profession.

He said fake news will kill journalism if urgent step was not taken to fight the fake practitioners.

According to him, it is becoming difficult to differentiate between major practitioners and fake medium, especially with the advent of social media.
