Judiciary autonomy: Labour threatens to join JUSUN, PASAN strike

As the industrial action by members of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) enters day 28, the organised labour has advised state governors to obey the constitutional provisions granting financial autonomy to the judiciary.

In a joint May Day celebration, both NLC and TUC expressed disappointment with the way and manner the state governors who are products of the constitution are disobeying same document.

NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba and his TUC counterpart said the struggle for judicial autonomy did not start today as it has been on for years, and wondered why the governors are foot-dragging.

“Unfortunately, all entreaties for the implementation of Section 121(3) of the Constitution that supports it has remained a mirage because of the indifference of the governors. To say we are disappointed with the recent strike embarked upon by the judiciary workers is to say the least.

“Come to think of it, what other reason could they give for not allowing the three arms of government to function autonomously if not for ease of corruption? It has become a case of “he who pays the piper dictates the tune”.

“It is regrettable that for over two weeks activities in our courts were paralysed just because of ego and the domineering influences of our Governors. Congress and its affiliates will not hesitate in solidarity to join the action within two weeks if nothing is done.

“We wish to reiterate our full support to our comrades and compatriots in the legislature who are fighting for the full autonomy of the legislative arm of government. This is a patriotic struggle that is primarily aimed at boosting our democratic experience and deepening our democratic culture.”
