KADGIS, ALGON sensitise farmers on land registration

The Kaduna Geographic Information Service (KADGIS) in collaboration with Association Local Government of Nigeria ((ALGON) and Famab Consults have urged farmers to key into the farmers agricultural land data capture project.

The process is to ensure the registration of farm lands across the state through a systematic property registration programme (SPRP).

Addressing the farmers at the formal opening at Soba local government council secretariat Thursday, director general of the agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Hussaini who was represented by Abdullahi Tukur said the policy of getting all farm lands registered was an initiative established far back and supported by GEMS in order to support states and it had become operational for long.

He said, due to lack of commitment by the previous governments, it didn’t enjoy much functionality until the inception of the administration of Mallam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufa’i who is committed to ensuring that it gets the required functionality.

Alhaji Hussaini stated that policy started with other lands uses, especially residential in some of the local government areas.

He said: “Today, we are witnessing another milestone in which farmlands are included through this coordinated programme championed by the private company under this initiative. Processing of certificate will be fast, easy and affordable to prospectus beneficiaries.

“I want to commend the consultant for this laudable initiative that targeted not only certificating of the farmlands but will also bring together farmers and relevant stakeholders to discuss on issues that affect farming practice in the state.

He urged local governments’ extension officers to share their experiences on better ways to improve farming practice in the state and training on the use of GPS tool which would facilitate with ease, the establishment and calculation of farmlands.

Earlier, the local government council chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Mahmud Aliyu said the policy would bridge the gap between non-formal and formal agriculture in the state to achieve global best practice in agricultural development.

Alhaji Aliyu stated that agriculture comprised land, development, agro inputs and market.

He noted that the workshop would establish relationship between various stakeholders to come together and interact, identify and analyze areas of collaboration in order to address bottlenecks associated with agricultural practices in the state.

He further stated that the policy would assist local governments’ extension officers to acquire more knowledge of using GPS tool and its application in the field of practice.

In his remarks, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, represented by Uban Garin Zazzau, District Head of Soba, Bashir Shehu Idris, said traditional rulers were important in land development, adding that they were the middle men between farmland owners and the government.

He stated that by the policy, farmlands would be identified by the traditional rulers at different levels. They will ensure that lands presented for certification were genuinely acquired through legitimate means by the farmers.

Alhaji Idris said, “Government usually recognised documents issued by the district heads named district head confirmation letter signed and endorsed by the ruler.
