Kaduna-Abuja highway robbery claims 6

Insecurity along the Kaduna – Abuja highway heightened at the weekend, following a robbery attack which caused the death of a driver and a policeman. Blueprint sources disclosed that the incident also resulted in a car crash that killed four other persons and left 10 more injured.

It was gathered that over 20 armed men, who targeted commuters on the expressway, mounted a roadblock around Jere and were stopping vehicles travelling on the road as early as 6:00 am when the accident occurred. A team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on patrol, who got wind of the operation, tried to stop the robbers when they were said to have opened fire and in the gun battle, one of the police sergeants in the team was hit and killed.

A driver of one of the vehicles stopped by the armed men was also caught by a stray bullet in the cause of the gun duel and he also died. As the exchange of fire was going on, an accident was said to have occurred near the scene in which four people lost their lives, while 10 other passengers were injured. The bodies of the accident victims and the two killed in the robbery attacks were rushed to a hospital nearby.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mukhtar Hussaini Aliyu, confirmed the incident. He said “men of SARS were around the area when the robbery was going and they moved to the scene. “One police officer was shot and a driver in one of the vehicles was shot in the cause of the crossfire.” He said the police had commenced an investigation into the matter
