Kaduna state House of Assembly, yesterday, suspended two of its members, Bityong Nkom (PDP, Kaura) and Danladi Kwasu (PDP, Zangon Kataf) indefinitely for allegedly dividing the House.
This was just as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kaduna state chapter, condemned the act and called for immediate recall of the two lawmakers.
The decision followed a motion on matter of urgent public importance, moved by Alhaji Muktar Hazo, representing Basawa constituency, who claimed that the two members were engaged in activities that were intended to destabilise the Assembly.
He said: “They were doing things that would bring the Assembly into dispute.
This Assembly is known nationwide as one of the best and as such we should uphold that. In this regard, and in order to safeguard the integrity of this great Assembly, I wish to move that Danladi Kwasu and Bityong Nkom, both representing Kaura and Zangon Kataf, respectively, be suspended from this Assembly till further notice.”
Alhaji Aliyu Abdulrahman Haruna (APC, Kawo) constituency seconded the motion, saying “as members of this Assembly, we need to drop our differences with the party from which we were elected.”
The speaker, thereafter, directed the sergeant-at-arms to take the two members out of the plenary and adjourned the sitting till today.
Speaking at the PDP headquarters, the state Chairman of the party, Chief Felix Hassan Hyet, said the two lawmakers were suspended without any reason being advanced.
He said: “They have briefed us and we realised that there is no reason for their suspension. If somebody has done anything wrong, he should be told what he has done and given chance to defend himself before action is taken against him.
“We want to ask the Speaker whether within five minutes the House can mete out punishment to a member without telling him what he has done wrong. We found it unfortunate; we took exception to what the Speaker and Kaduna state House of Assembly have done and call for a reversal of the development and apologise to the members and the PDP. Anything short of that will not be acceptable. We will not allow anybody, any party, to scuttle democracy in the state,” he said.
