Kaduna health workers begin strike tomorrow

Kaduna Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) is set to embark on indefinite strike tomorrow Saturday, March 1, until the state government was ready to pay the consolidated health salary structure of its members.

According to the union, its members would remain at home from midnight today, February 28, till further notice.
The chairperson of the Union, Comrade Cecilia Musa, said the strike became necessary because all efforts to make the state government fulfil its promises in this regard had been abortive.

“The strike begins 1st March and we are urging all our members to sit by their television set at home until they hear from us. We are not going to lock any gate and we hope no life will be lost in the struggle.”
She also lamented the nonchalant attitude of government towards the health sector, adding that there were shortages of health workers operating in the state.

She said: “The situation is pathetic because according to WHO, a nurse is supposed to attend to six patients, but as at today in Kaduna, a nurse takes care of 30-40 patients a day leading to stress among the health workers in the state.

“There is need for urgent employment of health workers in the state or the sector will crash because of mass retirement and movement to other states where the CMSS is paid.”
