Kaduna: Kurmin stun Kagarko as Commissioner’s Cup kicks off



Kurmin Jibrin FC dropped the underdog toga to defeat Kagarko North FC 4-2 on penalties after both sides played to a 1-1 draw during regulation time of an exciting opening match of Commissioner Cup yesterday in Kaduna.  


The football competition, which is in support of the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Nasir el-Rufai, is sponsored by the Commissioner for commerce, industry and tourism, Mrs Ruth Geoffrey Alkali in conjunction with Mother of All and Albarranne Foundation.
The 10 participating teams drawn from the 10 political wards of the local government include, Kagarko North, Kagarko South, Jere North, Jere South, Iddah, Kukui, Katugal, Kushe, Aribi and Kurmin Jibrin. Shortly before the kickoff, there was a march past of the 10 participating teams who were clad in ‘APC Next Level’ branded T-shirts for the competition.


Speaking after performing the kickoff at the Kubacha football pitch, the Commissioner said that the competition in addition to drumming support for President Buhari and Malam Nasir is also to foster unity and peaceful coexistence among the 10 wards that make up the Kagarko local government area of the state where she hails from. She added that matches will be played in three centres namely Kubacha, Jere and Kagarko.


She disclosed that a football academy would be established in the local government in no distant time from now, hence the competition is part of efforts to discover talents who will be part of the academy. Mrs Alkali urged the participating youths to shun all forms of social vices and make good use of their youthful age to promote peace and unity in the local government area, the state and country in general.


The local government council Chairman, Hon. Nasara Rabo, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on political Matters, Hon. Darius Kura, commended the Commissioner for initiating the competition which, he said, will go a long way in uniting the people of the local government and neighborhood areas.


Finals of the competition is scheduled to be played on the 2nd of February 2019 at GSS Kagarko football pitch at the headquarters of the local government.
