Kaduna: Police arrest man with firearm, warn vigilante against torturing suspects

The Kaduna state Police Command has arrested man suspected to be a member of armed robbery gang with Beretta pistol in Sabon Tasha, Chikun local government area of Kaduna state.
The Kaduna state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mohammed Jalige, said in Kaduna on Tuesday that, “the Kaduna police Command had on 2nd January 2021 at about 2030hrs acted on reliable intelligence and succeeded in arresting one Jonathan Yakubu ‘M’ at No.16 Unguwan Bulus in Sabon Tasha area of Chikun LGA and recovered a sophisticated Beretta pistol in his possession.
“Prior to his arrest, information has it that Jonathan Yakubu and his gang members have been terrorising the said area dispossessing innocent citizens of their valuables. He is currently giving the police useful information on the whereabouts of his gang members who are now at large and concerted efforts are intensified to ensure they are brought to book.
“In view of the above, the Kaduna Police Command under the able leadership of CP UM Muri is still reiterating the need for members of various communities to be on the same page with the Police in matters of public safety and security as it is everybody’s business.”
Meanwhile, the Kaduna state Police Command has warned operatives of Kaduna state igilance Service, otherwise known as vigilante to always take recourse to law and hand over suspect arrested for any offence to the police for prosecution instead of meting out torture or other forms of punishment to such suspects.

Speaking against the background of the killing of nine people and destruction of properties in Kaya, Giwa local government area on Sunday in the aftermath of the killing of four suspected bandits by the men of state vigilance in the community, Kaduna state PPRO, ASP Jalige, urged every citizen to always recourse to the law.
“As the Kaduna state Command and other sister security agencies make efforts to sustain peace in the state and while appreciating the efforts of the vigilante personnel in Kaduna state, all vigilante men are hereby warned to strictly comply with the Vigilance Service Law of Kaduna State, 2016 particularly Sections 9(6) and 10(1) thereof.
“The sections provide inter alia that suspects arrested for any reason should not be subjected to any form of torture and must be handed over to the Police for appropriate action. In view of this, the Command will no longer take it lightly with any vigilance service personnel that will engage in killing or torturing any suspect arrested without due procedure as provided by the Law.       “The Commissioner of Police Kaduna state Command CP UM Muri is deeply saddened by the ugly incident and hereby condole with the relatives of the deceased. He equally calls on the general public particularly the vigilante men to always avoid taking the law into their hands but to promptly report any suspicious activities or person(s) within their domain to the nearest security agency to proactively prevent reoccurrence of such dastardly act against the law abiding citizens of the state.
“It is further emphasized that the natives of our communities should imbibe the culture of peaceful coexistence with one another and to embrace each other with love and affection and to ensure that things are done within the ambit of the law. They should also eschew violence and reprisal attack against one another, as doing so will only exacerbate problems rather than solving them.”
