Kaduna requires 2.31m litres daily to end fuel scarcity – DPR

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) needs to double its current daily allocation of fuel to Kaduna state from 30 trucks to 70 trucks for the state and the North to end the persistent fuel scarcity, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has said.

Fuel scarcity resurfaced in Kaduna and other parts of the country, late last year, and despite measures by government agencies to control the situation, it has persisted. According to the DPR Zonal Operations Controller, Northwest, Alhaji Isa Tafida, which consists of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto and Zamfara states, require nothing less than 2.31 million litres per day to end the persistent fuel scarcity in the state and its environs.

The DPR Zonal Operations Controller told energy correspondents on Wednesday in Kaduna that Kaduna metropolis alone which consist of four local government areas would required at least 40 trucks daily to meet its domestic needs.

Tafida said the current allocation of 30 trucks of petroleum products to the state by the NNPC and the Petroleum Pipeline Marketing Company, was grossly inadequate.

“The zonal operations controller is worried that despite all the efforts being put by the DPR in collaboration with the security agencies, especially the Civil Defence, to ensure that the few trucks of PMS (petrol) received are sold to the public at government approved price, fuel scarcity is still being experienced in the state. We want to warn therefore that any marketer that engages in any illegal activity that creates problem of fuel distribution and sales will be severely sanctioned.

“The DPR also appreciates the efforts the Kaduna state government is making at ensuring that normalcy of the supply of the PMS is restored. DPR is always ready to collaborate with the state government and other stakeholders to ensure that the lingering fuel scarcity is addressed,” he said.
