A founding member of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has described the death of the first civilian governor of old Kaduna state, Alhaji Lawal Kaita as a great loss to the country.
Kaita died at the age of 85 on Tuesday after a protracted illness in a hospital, in Abuja.
Yakasai in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, described late Kaita as a thoroughbred politician, who contributed immensely to the development of the country’s democracy.
The statement reads: “The death of the first civilian governor of the old Kaduna state, Alhaji Lawal Kaita is a great loss not only to members of his family, the people of Katsina and Kaduna states but to the entire people of the North in particular and the nation at large.
“Late Lawal Kaita was one of the few retired civil servants who ventured into politics and came out successful by becoming one of the elected civilian governors during the Second Republic.
“Still more, it is part of late Lawal Kaita’s legacies that he happened to be one of seven people who initiated the formation of the National Movement, one of the political associations during the 1977 Constituent Assembly.
National Movement later metamorphosed into the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) a truly political party, with nationwide acceptance and the Second Republic Nigeria’s governing party.
“Alhaji Lawal Kaita served as Presidential Liaison officer for Kano state between 1979 and 1983 under President Shehu Shagari.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace and may Almighty Allah grant his family the fortitude and courage to bear this colossal loss.
Amen.
