Amidst lockdown, Kano buries, mourns as ex-Attorney General dies

Renowned Kano-based legal practitioner and former Attorney General, Barrister Aliyu Umar, Friday morning died after a protracted illness that took him to Beirut Lebanon in frantic search for medical cure.

Before his death, Barr Umar served at various capacities with the Kano state Ministry of Justice and retired as a Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Mr Umar ventured into private legal practice as a principal partner with A.A. Umar, SAN, and Co.

He served as a Commissioner for Justice and Kano State Attorney General for two consecutive terms between 2003 and 2011.

He also became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, in 2013.

Being the longest serving Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice  in Kano, who had served for eight consecutive years under the leadership of Malam Ibrahim Shekarau as governor, the late revered legal icon fought tooth and nail to ensure the establishment of Hisba guards and the appointment of competent high Court Justices, a feat that made him to be highly admired, adored and revered by his contemporaries.

Paying tribute to the late great legal icon, a renowned Kano-based public affairs commentator, Alhaji Bashir Hayatu, said Kano has lost a rare gem in the competitive legal profession, adding that his compassion, pity and sincerity of purpose would never be forgotten by those who knew much about his antecedents.
