Kano state government has empowered 405 widows and female migrants from Central African Republic (CAR) with relief materials worth millions of naira.
Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso disclosed this during the presentation of the items to the beneficiaries through the Ministry of Women Affairs and the state Zakkat and Hubusi Commission in Kano.
He said the training accorded to them would enable them to start a trade that would enable them take care of themselves and their children.
“Our religion stresses the care of widows and orphans, which is considered as a very high form of charity and therefore enjoins us to look after them,” he said.
On the CAR returnees, the governor described their plight as “very painful,” saying that the government would assist them to start life again and fully reintegrate into the Nigerian society.
The governor thanked Kofar Wambai Traders Association for donating clothes and bags of rice to the victims, and called on other well-meaning individuals and groups to emulate the gesture.
Also speaking, the representative of the Kano Emirate Council, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, expressed delight over the state government’s efforts in empowering indigenes, and appealed to other states to copy the Kano example in order to get rid of unemployment and poverty.
