Kano lifts ban on tricyclists’ operations in strategic streets

The Kano state government has at the eleventh hour lifted the ban imposed on tricyclists’ operation in strategic roads in Kano metropolis, following extensive deliberation on the embagoe which lasted for 24 hours.

The decision came on the heels of the furore generated by what  the  tricyclists described as a punitive measure introduced by the Kano Roads Traffic  Agency, popularly known as KAROTA,  to keep them out of business.

The measure also came in the wake of the purchase of 150 mass transit vehicles by  the state government meant to cover the roads prohibited for tricyclists which came into effect  Wednesday and eventually withdrawn  on what the deputy governor Alhaji Nasir Yusuf Gawun described as compassionate ground.

Alhaji Gawun said the Ganduje administration was ever ready to listen to the voice of reason and acceded to the yearnings of aspirations of the people as required in an ideal democratic setting.

He added that government was very much concerned about the wellbeing of the general public. Our correspondent who went around Kano metropolis sighted hundreds of people trekking on foot to reach their respective destinations  as the tricyclists could not  be sighted after hectic hours of waiting.

A tricyclist who spoke to our correspondent  shortly  after the ban was lifted commended the deputy governor, Alhaji Gawuna, for his swift intervention in resolving the impasse.
