Kano Pillars, Akwa United settle for draw

Kano Pillars and Akwa United played out a 0-0 draw in the third game of the Nigeria Professional Football League invitational tournament at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Wednesday in Kano.
The result put Akwa United on top of their group with two points with MFM and Pillars on one point each.
MFM and Kano Pillars will clash in the last game in the group on Friday.
The first chance of the game fell to Kano Pillars’ Nwagua Nyima but his shot was well saved by Ismaila Shagari in goal for Akwa United.
Junior Lokosa had the ball in the net for Kano Pillars on sox minutes but his effort was cancelled by the centre referee for handball.
The tempo of the game dropped afterwards with the two teams failing to carve out any real goal scoring opportunities.
Kano Pillars goalkeeper Danladi Isah was tested for the first time in the game nine minutes before half time and he proved equal to the task, making double saves from Ismaila Gata and Musa Newman.
The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes before the break but Lokosa had his effort blocked by Zeme Tenton.
A disappointing second half saw both teams fail to threaten each other’s goal area.
Substitute Amaechi Orji was close to scoring the game’s opening goal in the 73rd minute after a deflected pass from Gabriel Wassa but his well placed shot hit the goal post.
Pillars Manu Garba directed his effort from a promising position wide five minutes from time.
