Kano Speaker impeached, predecessor reinstated

Twenty-seven out of 40 members of the Kano state House of Assembly yesterday impeached its Speaker, Alhaji Yusuf Abdullahi Ata and reinstated his predecessor in office, Alhaji Kabiru Alasan Rurum.
The impeachment is coming three months after the crisis that led to the resignation of the former speaker following accusation of financial impropriety leveled against him.
Blueprint learnt on good authority that the impeachment of Alhaji Ata followed growing discontent by some members of the House concerning the way and manner the erstwhile speaker was running the business of the legislative body.
Addressing members of the House shortly after his emergence as the new Speaker, Rurum said his second coming was a clear demonstration of the fact that he had no skeleton in his cupboard during his reign as the Speaker of the House before his voluntary resignation adding that the confidence reposed in him by his colleagues would not be eroded.
He pointed out that he is known to all for his open door policy and amenable posture which endeared him to all his fellow legislators in the House.
He further posited that all that was needed to move the legislative House forward was inclusive government devoid of executive fiat.
“I am today happy and proud for the honour bestowed on me to resume my revered status as the speaker few months after my resignation.
Every member of this honourable House is conversant with the fact that I would live up to my billing.
I know my areas of legislative responsibility and I will never derail from that position.
“What I want from you is the same level of support and cooperation you gave me when I was in the saddle.
We are in need of progress and the development of the entire democratic system and we should all work towards achieving a common goal and put all forms of pettiness, rancour and acrimony behind, “he said.
