Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, has counseled private and public health practitioners to avoid conflicts in the discharge of their professional responsibility that would lead to ethical misconduct.
Speaking at a 2-day sensitization seminar entitled; Ethics Professionalism and Quality Health Care Delivery in Private Practice, Yusuf said all that the medical practice entails is the protection of lives and property of the public. He stressed that health practitioners should not see themselves as being in the profession to make money.
He said: “You should consider the fact that, people are now conscious of their rights. You must uphold the virtue of professional conduct. Patients are human beings not animals. The medical practice is all about sacrifice and God will reward you.
“Most of the things happening today are cases of gross unethical conduct in medical practice. It is out of such a concern that we felt the need to revive the private medical practice registration unit for sanity to prevail in the system,” he added.
He however revealed that the state government is fully committed towards improving the working condition of both private and public health sectors, affirming that, the state government is determined to enforce professional ethics at all levels.
Also speaking, senior special assistant to the governor on private medical institutions, Dr. Salisu Ahamed Ibrahim, said ethical issue in medical practice is too important to be ignored and that patients must be treated with high regard and humility as a way of maintaining a high quality.
