Kano State government has said that it had not recorded a single case of polio virus in the last 58 months saying the halt in transmission of poliomyelitis virus in Kano state was achieved through sustained and collective efforts by the state government.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kano Sunday, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Alhaji Usman Bala, stated that “the fight against polio was yet to be over as more rounds of polio immunization campaigns were needed to successfully eradicate the disease from Kano state.”
According to him, “part of the strategies employed to ensure that Kano state achieved polio eradication include; intensive surveillance of polio virus across the state” adding that the surveillance system was not only mounted in humans but in the environment as well.
He added “that measures introduced to strengthen routine immunization services include; establishment of Local Government Routine Immunization Coordination Centre (LERICC) in all the 44 local government area of the state and the procurement and installation of two(2) 40m3 walk-in cold room for the state.”
He called on parents in the State to continue to avail their children for immunization during subsequent rounds of polio immunization until the battle is convincingly won, and Nigeria declared polio free .
