Kanu 5-A-Side football tournament begins in Owerri

Legendary Ex-Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo Kanu, has disclosed that his selfsponsored week-long fi ve-aside football tournament for tertiary institutions in Imo State will begins in Owerri from today to August 6, 2017. Th e tournament, under the aegis of the Kanu Sports Center Owerri, the former Arsenal forward and UNICEF Ambassador hinted it is in furtherance of his giving back to the society disposition. Imo State University, Federal University of of Technology – FUTO, Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Federal University of Agriculture Umudike, Imo State Polytechnic and Federal Polytechnic Nekede are the six participating tertiary institutions. According to Kanu, each of the institutions is expected to come with a minimum of 50 supporters as there will also be rewards for the fi rst, second and third best supporting teams.

“It is my modest way of giving back to the society, as well as stimulating healthy sporting spirit and competitions amongst our higher institutions,” Kanu, who is also organising a 10-day basketball clinic in Owerri stated. “Th is is because, like it is often said, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. “Sports and academics are partners in progress, and together they make our youths better for tomorrow’s leadership,” Kanu stressed. At the end of the week-long soccer showpiece, highest goal scorer, best goalkeeper and best player of the tournament will be rewarded with prizes. “One of the attractions of the competition, aside the fi nancial rewards, is the fact that players adjudged to be outstanding will earn automatic place in Papilo FC,” the former captain of the
