Following the failure of the Katsina state government to fulfill its promise made to pay both primary and secondary school teachers the 27.5 per cent Teachers Peculiar Allowances, the state chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to embark on indefinite strike in the state.
The state secretary of the, Union Comrade Jamilu Aliyu, disclosed this at a press conference yesterday in Katsina.
The union alleged that Governor Ibrahim Shema of the state had promised to pay the entire teachers their allowance in 2013 but failed to honour the pledge.
“Since the Governor has indicated his willingness to restore the said allowance to all eligible teachers in the state we wish to remind him through the media,” he said.
Aliyu said the union has no choice but to remind the Governor of his promise, since
the national head office of the NUT was putting pressure on the state wing to ensure the immediate restoration of the allowance.
He said beside the union, the teachers were also “on the neck” of its officials to ensure the payment.
Comrade Aliyu said a letter of reminder had been written to the state Commissioner of Education since last week and a copy had been sent to both state government, head of Service, and others.
The letter, he quoted, said: “I am directed to remind the Hon, Commissioner that, your prompt action will be appreciated, bearing in mind that schools were in session, and further delay on the immediate restoration of the 27.5% of Teachers Peculiar Allowance may result in negative actions by teachers.”
