Kebbi Opens: First Nigeria’s gold medalist at 2019 African Games set for post-tourney battle

Nigeria’s first gold medalist at the 2019 All African Games, Chinazum Nwosu, is set to return to the fighting arena after confirming her participation at the forthcoming Kebbi Opens, which is scheduled to hold between 9 – 11 November in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. 

The event, which has an NTF-D national ranking, will be the last nationally ranked event before the highly anticipated season ending best-of-the-best championships in December.At the last All African Games held at the Moulay Abdallah Indoor Hall in Rabat, Morocco, Nwosu defeated hosts and Africa’s number one at the time, Morocco’s Wafae El Atri 26 – 22 to clinch the first gold medal for Team Nigeria.

With the focus turned towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifiers in February 2020, the newly crowned African Champion who is employed by and competes for the NSCDC will be looking to maintain her fine form over the next three months to stand a chance of clinching the Olympic ticket.The Kebbi Taekwondo Open, which will be hosting only Olympic weight categories, will provide the first test for Nwosu’s form after her All African Games heroics.

Already registered in Nwosu’s category are tough opposition including former African Youth Bronze medalist and current national champion in the -57kg, Helen Okoko, and the duo of gold medalists at the just concluded 10th Korean Ambassador’s Cup in the female -53kg and -57kg, Blessing Abani and Fatimoh Abdullahi.

Chinazum Nwosu is coached by one of the National Coaches, Mr John Victor.The event is being organized by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation in conjunction with the Kebbi State Taekwondo Association.
