Kidnapping: ASUP tasks FG on students, academic environment

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has implored federal and state governments to take proactive steps to safeguard the lives and property of all academic environments to curtail indiscriminate occurrence of kidnap activities on campuses.

A statement signed by chairman of Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria chapter of the union, Comrade Engineer Aliyu Musa Kofa, which was made available to Blueprint in Zaria Sunday, read in part: “This call became necessary to restore security confidence on the citizens particularly those in academic environments.

“Recall that on the November 14, 2020, one of us, who is a senior lecturer in the college, Atiku Bello was kidnapped alongside two children belonging to another staff, Sunusi Hassan who was shot in the hand and narrowly escaped and later hospitalised.

“The incident happened in the official staff quarters of the institution at about 9pm.

“Our Rector, Kabir Abdullahi, had earlier attributed the incident to the porous nature of the school with vast unfenced forest thereby exposing the polytechnic community to unforeseen danger,” he said.

The chairman described the incident as unfortunate and urged security operatives to as a matter of urgency ensure the safe release of its member and two children without paying any ransom.
